Summer Solstice Swim – June 21st

Páraic Casey’s Summer Solstice Swim:

Wednesday 21st June @ 6pm, Sandycove Island

We’d like to invite you to remember and celebrate a very much loved and missed fellow Sandycove Island swimmer, and beloved husband of Riana Parsons.

His passion for swimming brought him to amazing places. We would like to celebrate his great achievements and passion for life, with a swim round the Island followed by some cake, which he often did too.

BBQ’d meat, buns and condiments will be provided, but if you want to bring some food to be BBQ’d yourself then please do (we will not have veggie/vegan/gluten free options – please bring these to be cooked if you wish, it’s not a bother).

All salads, cake and drinks (hot and cold) are welcome, so bring plenty!

TITW @ 6.30pm
Kind regards

Donna Galvin

Club Secretary

Updated Calendar – V5

Hi All –

I am attaching the updated version of the Munster Swim Events Calendar for 2017.

Please note:

  • Most events have max limits, so may close entries before the date, do not wait until last minute to sign up, if you know you are going to a swim, or think you want to do a swim, then enter to have your place.
  • Most events do not allow sign ups on the day, waves/merchandise/logistics/food may have to be arranged before the day.
  • It takes a lot of behind he scenes admin/time/effort to put on Events, please respect the volunteers who give up time to do the best they can for an event, of which majority are run for some local charity.
  • If you find yourself unable to swim, your entry fee usually goes to the Charity, refunds are very rare.
  • If you can not swim an event (due to limits/illness etc), please ask the orgainser if they need volunteers on the day. There are MANY jobs to be covered on the day of a swim, please step forward, everyone has to start someone with learning the ropes of an event.
  • This year the calendar is looking great, many options, over many distances, from mid May to mid October, if you are thinking of putting on an event, let me know, between myself and Ned and a few other seasoned organisers, we will help guide you on what needs to be done. Its all about sharing the load.
  • And finally, remember to swim smart and swim safe, if in doubt, don’t swim.

Darkness into Light Swim 2017

** For 2017 – you need to email your name that you will be there on 6th May **

  • dilcorkswim@gmail.com and tell us your name please

To coincide with the Pieta House Darkness into Light Events, (See their page here) we are holding a Darkness into Light Swim at Myrtleville (as an alternative to the 100 runs being planned that morning!).

Meet by 4:40am & Swim at 5:00am on Sat 6th May (Civil Twilight is at 05:15, Sunrise is at 05:55).

Some Notes on the Swim:

Respect the time of day, arrive quietly, avoid shouting, slamming doors etc, common sense really, just be mindful of the sleeping residents.

  • There will be a donation Bucket for contributions to Pieta House.
  • Meet by 4:45am at the latest
  • Safety Briefing at 4:55am (and we will number everyone’s hands for check-in/check-out). Please report your number on way out.
  • TITW (Toes in the Water!) by 5:00am
  • Swim a Max of 30mins (for safety reasons, please adhere). Whatever your experience or speed, turn back after 10-15mins. 5mins is also an acceptable swim time.
  • DO NOT swim on your own, swim in 2s/3s, stick with your swim buddy so you can talk to them to check in with each other, don’t swim in huge groups, you’d be calling names all the time and your voices will travel over the water!. There will be less stop/starting with smaller groups.
  • We will meet at the bottom of the steps at 4:45, away from the houses to make sure we are all glowing.
  • As the colour of Pieta House is yellow, if you have a yellow hat, or a hat with yellow in it, wear it, it’ll be our nod to the Cause.
  • Remember it’s only May, expect the air to be cool at that hour. Have the layers of clothes ready for after the swim, and of course the Hot Flask for a cuppa!.
  • Bring a Flash light, you’d be surprised what you can’t find in the dark in the car!
  • After you get changed, and have your cuppa, and are wrapped up warm, enjoy the sunrise
  • Respect the time of day, get changed quietly, avoid shouting, slamming doors etc, common sense really, just be mindful of the sleeping residents.

As this is a night swim (to start), swimmers must have glow sticks on their hats and togs/wetsuits.

There is a link below to show you what the disposable single use glow sticks are like. These are an ideal alternative to the pricier reusable light (but that does have hundreds of hours light on it). It’s worth it to buy a batch of the snap&glow sticks if you will be doing more night swims over the next year or so!

There are cheap jewellery disposable versions in EuroGiant/Dealz etc, but these are not very bright out at sea and they tend to not stay in place too easily (they are not really made for sea swimming!). These should only be used as fun top-ups to the better stronger glow sticks. Plan ahead, do some research online, pair up with someone to share the costs of buying the glow sticks (share shipping costs etc).

Check these out on Amazon as an example of what you are looking for, for one time use, glow sticks.  There is also an Irish Website that sells them.

The reusable night lights for your goggle straps are Called ‘Guardian Adventure lights’ (they can be bought in Centra Crosshaven or CH Marine, Cork). If you want to buy them online, just Click!

Finally, I shouldn’t have to remind you, but as always, this swim is weather dependent 🙂

And Really this is a Finally, If anyone is willing to help out and stay on the beach while we swim and count us in/out, we’d love to have you, and also, anyone willing to kayak, we’d love to have you there too.. We’ll feed you coffee and cake (well, maybe not cake at 5am, but the offer stands!). email us dilcorkswim@gmail.com

Thanks, CAROL & ANGELA 🙂

March updates

Spring is coming….. we’re turning the corner of winter weather (hopefully)..

So it’s time to start marking your calendars with events. The Annual Cork Open Water / Sandycove Spring Dinner is on Friday 28th April in SoHo, Rooftop Bar. Open from 7pm, with BBQ food available from 8pm. The Space is limited (to 35), so sign up online to prepay for your spot and food. Don’t just turn up on night, we have to know the numbers beforehand to have appropriate food ordered, we do not want swimmers to be left hungry!! Link is HERE to book your place.

The Bulman swim is also available to book as one of the first swims of the summer, you must be a member of a Swim Ireland Club to swim this event, please sign up or Renew your Sandycove Island membership (Link to active). or check if your Tri Club is also registered to Swim Ireland (I know Cork Tri & Crosshaven Tri are, others, not sure yet). Of course, any other Swim Ireland club number will do too, Special Membership, Cork Masters, Sundays Well, Mallow etc, just make sure you have your 2017 number when you enter the swim.

I have updated the Events Calendar, most swims are open to book now, links are on the attached sheet, any queries on an event, please contact the organiser. Please sign up early, commit, and train appropriately for the distance. Most swims do have a numbers cut-off (as insurance only covers x amount). So do not assume you will get a place in an event close to the time.

As always, if you do not want to participate in a swim, the organisers will take any help they can get, please think about volunteering to Kayak, to checkin, to count out, to direct cars, to transport bags etc, there are many unseen tasks to keep an event running smoothly, everyone should pay back at least once a summer if possible, and then the same people are not on land all the time, missing the swim.

New Year Goals!

Welcome to 2017..

So here is a nice early season goal for you all.!

An overnight event on at Source Leisure Centre, you DO NOT need to be a member to participate in this event, it is open to all swimmers, triathletes etc..

Click on the link for full details and to enter, but there are Swim, Bike, Run options, mix and match or 2 or just swim.

For the swim, the pool will have all 5 lanes available from 10pm-5am. For the first few hours, to keep a structure, the lanes will be repeating 100s on times. place yourself in a lane where you can get 5-15sec rest between 100s.

Lane 2: 180x100m on 1.40   Lane 3: 150x100m on 1.50   Lane 4: 100x100m on 2.00   Lane 5: 80x100m on 2.15  and   Lane 1: Swimmers in and out option

It’s best to work as a lane doing this, last time we did this, we started with 8 in our lane, and each swimmer took their turn to lead the lane for 10x100s, it broke up the hours nicely, by moving positions every 10.! Whether you are there for one hour or 8, once you join a lane, fall in with their pace, and as long as you’re getting about 10sec rest between 100s you are in the right place.

Go On, sign up for one or two or more hours, you know you want to!.

Finally, if any of you want to volunteer to stay on deck with Eilis will you drop her a note please, extra eyes on sleepy swimmers will be needed!.

🙂

Turkey Swims 2016

It’s that time of year again, mark your Calendars for the Turkey Swim Dates 2016! Details & Dates below…

Remember this is open to everyone who swims regularly in the Sea, no matter where they normally swim! This is not exclusive to any club or group of swimmers, If you want to swim on a date, come along and join in, no matter where the swim is on! The Sandycove times are based on tides and are the same as the Sandycove swim calendar. At Myrtleville we can swim on any tide so there is a mix of Morning/afternoon times to try and suit all people days. There is a swim on every weekend to give people options.  There is nothing too early, swimming after a party night out is not pleasant!.Tradition continues with last Swim in Sandycove, it’s where this all started many years ago, we’ve just expanded it to every weekend now.
How the ‘Turkey Swims’ work:
** Swimmers Sign In and pay €2 on the day of Swim. (someone will have a money box and signin sheet – probably Carol, Angela or Eoin).
** Money Collected goes towards Prizes drawn on 17th/18th Dec at both locations, These include Butcher Vouchers (instead of an actual Turkey) and many other spot prizes (The Edge Vouchers / wine / chocolates / selection boxes etc!). We had over 30 prizes last year.
** Don’t Forget to Pay and Sign In, if you don’t you are not in the draw!
** Make however many swims you can.
** The more you swim, the more times you are entered for the ‘draw’.
** A Swim Dosn’t have to be a full lap of Sandycove, or 30mins, no min/max time or distance, turn up and do what you feel comfortable with on the day. Togs or Wetsuit, up to you, swim safe, stay warm, swim with similar speed buddies. Turning Up for Fresh Air and a chat also counts, sometimes that’s what we need.
** The Swimmers Turkey Series is a Social Event for Cork OW swimming in the Winter. Remember to bring your Flasks for after the swims, Nibbles are always welcome too!, there is talk of some people bringing cake! Have Fun and Enjoy 🙂

Autumn Swims

Hello…. So the summer is gone (too fast again), and we head into the last of the organized events of the season. We will soon be switching to weekend only swims (for those 9-5er’s!) and the Turkey swim will kick in within a few weeks.

In the meantime, Angela has sent an email and posted to Facebook about Membership renewal, it is due for the 2016-2017 swim season.

This will cover any pool (Masters) galas you may wish to enter, and any open water events that require a club membership/Swim Ireland Membership number. Please oblige Angela by signing up sooner rather than later, so you don’t forget (Especially with the Mallow Masters gala coming up on Saturday November 26th).

http://www.active.com/kinsale-cocork/water-sports/swimming/join-sandycove-swim-club-2017-season-2016

More Details coming soon, on AGM date, Turkey Swim dates, upcoming gala details etc. Continue to check the FB page as everything I post here, goes there too!, we have to cover all aspects of Social Media.!

Hope you all had a swimmingly good summer 🙂
